Beckenbauer: The Optimist

Posted by Pete in Bundesliga | 27 February 2006

The eternally omnipresent Kaiser has spoken again and declared that there won't be any hooliganism at this year's World Cup. Well, we can all sleep easy in our beds tonight then eh? Yes, the hundreds of fun lovin' criminals are cancelling their holiday plans as we speak.

But seriously, no matter how many security staff there are and regardless how good the contingency plans are, a few idiots are unfortunately bound to slip through the net. If we're lucky, there will only be a few, but Beckenbauer's claims smack of foolishness. Although I, like every right-minded football fan, am hoping for a smooth tournament, every World Cup held in Europe in the last 20 years, as well as European Championships (bar Portugal) has attracted some sort of trouble. This year won't be any different, although I'd be happy to be proved wrong.

A round-up of the weekend's Bundesliga action to follow tomorrow.
