Bundesliga - Week 27

Posted by Pete in Bundesliga | 30 March 2006

Perhaps, after much coming and going the Bundesliga title has finally been decided. Hamburg's unlikely 2:4 home defeat to Dortmund means that even with Bremen winning 5:0 against Hannover, Bayern are now 9 points clear of the chasing pack with seven games to go. Annoying as it might be, that team from Munich have done it again.

The relegation battle has reached a fairly decisive stage too. With Duisburg and Cologne both losing, Kaiserslautern's 3:0 win at 'Gladbach means that while they still have the chance of staying up, the afore-mentioned two might as well starting getting used to the joys of playing eine Englischwoche* as is the prerogative of Zweite Bundesliga teams.

So mid-table is still where it's happening. As soon as one team starts to put a run together, they blow it. Hence Stuttgart at home to Leverkusen meant a defeat for the VfB, while Hertha's match away at relegation threatened Mainz naturally ended in a 2:2 draw. The other UEFA Cup candidates' matches went in their favour. Confused? You should be. Basically, all you need to know at the moment is that 3 points separate fifth-placed Hertha from tenth-place Borussia Moenchengladbach.

* for Germans, playing league football on any day apart from Saturday and Sunday is regarded as a very peculiar English habit. More on this when I get round to a post on the new German TV rights.

Have they determined rights for Canadian station broadcasts? Does anyone know how to contact the guy that schedules the Fox Sports World games to perhaps be able to vote on which games to play each week?

Funny, we used to consider selling your sport down the river for TV money as a peculiarly American thing.

Ho hum.
