A goal by ex Wolves midfielder Steve Corica was enough to give Sydney FC the inaugural A League title at Aussie Stadium on Sunday..

The only goal of the game came on 62 minutes when Dwight Yorke, shaking off a lethargic first half to win the Joe Marston medal for Man of the Match, set up Corica on the edge of the area. The ‘Silver Fox’ side footed home from the edge of the area, sending the record crowd of 41,800 into wild celebration.

The Mariners, gallant in defeat, never looked like getting back on level terms, and will rue a series of missed chances in an open first half. Coach Lawrie McKinna was understandably ‘gutted’ but conceded that Sydney were the best team on the day.
