Season Review - Queensland
Posted by Jasper Reed in A-League, Queensland Roar | 11 March 2006

Nickname: Roar
Manager: Miron Bleiberg (Germany)
Home Strip: Orange Shirts/Blue Shorts
Final League Position: 6th
How did they do? 7 wins, 7 draws, 7 defeats; the Roar epitomised the A Leagues evenness. Fantastic support from the state which really considers itself a country, the Roar were let down by poor finishing for most of the season. When it all came good it was striker Alex Brosque who scored the goals, netting 5 times in the last 6 games. He has now moved to Sydney.
Star Player: With Brosque and Michael Baird, another consistent performer, gone it will be up to Brazilian striker Reinaldo to keep the Roar competitive. The 21 year old Brazilian former Feyenoord striker was signed in mid year and settled quickly into Queenslands quick passing game
You might also have heard of: Probably no one. Queensland have no players with English experience, opting for mostly home state talent
What do they need? A goal scorer to fill the void left by Brosque and Baird. Andy Cole has been mentioned as a target to do for the Roar what Dwight has done in Sydney
Little known fact: The only side named after a state, Queensland were originally launched as the Queensland Lions, until some bright spark noticed that the states AFL side was the Brisbane Lions

"You might also have heard of: Probably no one. Queensland have no players with English experience, opting for mostly home state talent".
This statement is somewhat untrue.
Queensland Roar has on its books:
Symon Lynch - from Dundee / Celtic / Preston (I believe)
Marcus Weadeu - (Played about 100 games in the German top flight)
Remo Buess - Played for numerous clubs in Switzerland
Hyuk-Su Seo - Korean International
Yuning Zhang - Chinese International
Spase Dilevsi - had a stint at Tottenham Hotspur and PSV Eindhoven
Sasa Ogenovski - played for Panahaiki.
Ante Milicic had a stay at NAC Breda
The Little known fact is also somewhat incorrect. Queensland Lions was originally the Brisbane Lions, but they sold their name to the AFL team when it was renamed from the Bears. The A-League license was given based on a name change, which was at that time still unfinalised.
