WC06: Germany kick-off in style

Okay it wasn't the greatest football match ever, but 6 goals in the opening game heralded the start of a highly anticipated World Cup.

For me two key things stood out in the game. First, two excellent strikes by Philipp Lahm and Torsten Frings for Germany. In what was at times a dull game these were brilliant goals.

Second was the weakness of the German defence. Going forward they looked strong and threatening but they played with a flat back four very high up the pitch which Costa Rica exploited for their first goal. The German defence did not look comfortable when Costa Rica made runs and played through balls - and against more accomplished opposition they could get severely punished.

I had dinner this week with a German who lives in the UK and he commented that both English and German fans have a real sense that this time they have a strong chance. England have their chance to prove themselves tomorrow but on oday's evidence, germany have some work to do if they are to lift the trophy as hosts.
