So long Beckham and thanks for the free kicks

Following England's defeat at the hands of the Portuguese, David Beckham has today resigned the captaincy though still hopes to play a part in Engand's future.
It was the greatest honour of my career when Peter Taylor made me England captain and I fulfilled the England dream
But he didn't quite fulfill the dream of every England fan by bringing home silverware.
I'm not surprised that Beckham has chosen now to go. Yes he scored a great goal from a free-kick to lead England to victory against Ecuador but it was only in the first half against Portugal that we saw him create any threat down the right-hand side.
His place has been under pressure from Lennon and his captaincy is being challenged by Neville, Terry and Gerard.
The media are now trotting out his achievements and low-points, but they are missing what I consider to be his biggest success.
When Beckham was installed as captain, the England dressing-room was split into factions - Man Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool players sticking to their own and not gelling as a unit. Beckham's big success was in breaking those barriers down and making England one team.
That work is done now and we need a captain who can motivate and drive the team. With his waning England form that is harder for Beckham to achieve.
He has done a great job as captain, but he's made the right decision. Now we need the right replacement.
