Brazil - Ronaldo needs to be retired

The problem with players of a legendary status is that it takes a brave manager to leave them out of the team, but as time goes by they become less effective and the team under-performs.

This is Brazil's problem with Ronaldo. There is no doubt that at his peak he was a collossal player and deserved a regular spot in the greatest team in the world. But he's long past his prime and he's become a liability to the Brazil side.

He did nothing in Brazil's encounter with Croatia yesterday. The BBC commentator summed it up as he was being subsitituted - "Ronaldo is jogging off the pitch, that's the fastest he's moved all game". Ronaldinho couldn't make his customary killer through balls as Ronaldo offered no outlet - in this way Ronaldo's performance impacts the ability of other Brazilian team members to play to their best.

It's time to judge Ronaldo on his current performance not his histortical contribution. On that basis he doesn't deserve to be the front man for a team of Brazil's stature.

I believe Ronaldo is still the best finisher in the world and he could score against any team. The only problem is his match fitness as he has been out of match practice since injury at Real Madrid. I believe he would go on to become top scorer again and beat mullers goal scoring record.
