ABB: Anyone But Brazil

Posted by Jasper Reed in Brazil, World Cup | 11 June 2006

I hate everyone’s attitude towards Brazil.

I’ve always hated it, the general acceptance that they are the team to beat. Well, I’m getting in early before I look like I'm stating the obvious...Brazil wont win this World Cup.

Yes, Brazil have sneaked a couple of World Cup wins recently but when I was growing up they went 24 years between drinks...and how many of their wins have been in Europe?

Has everyone also failed to notice how the World Cup is always played in summer? Anyone care to mention the year round average temperature in Rio? Tip; it's higher than Dundee's. Play the World Cup in January in Grimsby and see how much ‘Joga Bonita’ is played then, Ronny.

Besides all of this, I'm more than a bit sick and tired of every non thinking 'expert' (and boy, are there a lot of 'experts' in Australia all of a sudden) solemnly proclaiming that Brazil are the originators and keepers of The Beautiful Game. It's the classic, play-safe cop out from ex players who have formed their opinions from the 'Spotters Guide to World Cups' and yet insist on foisting them upon an unsuspecting, gullible public (yes, Craig Foster.... I’m talking about you). Remember, this is a continent that still has to ask what a yellow card means, and why the defending team doesn’t get a corner, such is the level of knowledge from mainstream Australia after one World Cup in 32 years. The trite outpourings of Foster ensures there is a long, long way to go...

O-F-F B-R-A-Z-I-L.

There.

I’ve done something you can apparently never do, according to Foster and co.....

I’ve ‘written off’ Brazil.

I strongly agree. I'm tired of those irritating stars on that yellow jersey of theirs. I think some other countries deserve some more stars (like France, Germany, Italy, and Czech Republic). I say it loud and clear "Poo on Brazil" I guess I will be unforgiven for that!
