Espanyol vs Sevilla - What a Final

Posted by Martin in UEFA Cup | 18 May 2007

I was one of the lucky ones that had the opportunity to be in Scotland and watch the game live.

Never having been to Hampden or Glasgow come to think of it, it was definitely and experience I'll remember.

O.k I'd of like to have seen an English or Scottish team play, but all credit to the Spanish, who's behaviour was impeccable and were a credit to their country. They made the whole occasion memorable.

From the minute I arrived in the city, their was a real party atmosphere. The authorities had tried to segregate the fans from the opposing teams, with Espanyol kept to Merchant City.

The hotel I was staying in was located in that area, yet it was full of fans from Sevilla. Even the hotelier couldn't explain how that came to be and had pre-prepared banners and rosettes in the Espanyol colours, having to swap them at the last minute! The Scots were the perfect hosts.

The noise at the ground was deafening, and watching the fans at the game, was like watching a game of tennis and just as enjoyable as the actual match. Sevilla would pipe up with a chant, then stop and a few seconds later Espanyol would rise the challenge and sing. This went on through out the game, going backwards and forwards. Even when Sevilla eventually won, the Espanyol fans didn't go quiet.

Oh and the game wasn't bad either!

I just hope the games over the coming week have the same atmosphere and the fans behave in the same way!
