Rooney fantastic on Saturday? What was you watching!

Was i watching a different game on Saturday? From where i was sitting in the east stand Wayne Rooneys performance doesn't match the plaudits he recieved afterwards.

Having read numerous match reports from various papers, two things have wound me up beyond belief. Firstly is the reporteers claiming Rooney was back to his best, and secondly was the lack of coverage Leighton Baines got despite putting in another stellar performance at left back.

More on Baines later though.

Don't get me wrong, Wayne Rooney wasn't poor on Saturday, neither was he fantastic however. The United front man was above average at best. In the first half his only real contribution was a shot that hit the crossbar. Other than that he was well shackled by Emmerson Boyce, who coincidentally had his best performance in a Latics shirt.

Sir Alex obviously knew Boyce was our weak link, thus putting Rooney on the left.

Rooney did improve in the second half, and set up the second goal. other than that he went on numerous runs which ended in Wigan regaining possession. From my viewpoint Ryan Giggs and Ole Gunnar were the reason United won, not the boy wonder.

Now Leighton Baines. Despite scoring another stunning goal, his second in the space of one week, he got little coverage. The Daily Star, for example, gave him just TWO lines, before they returned to the Rooney praise. Not good enough.

I know more people want to read about Wayne Rooney and not Leighton Baines, but if Rooney had scored that goal we would be hearing about it for weeks!

Come on press, give Bainsey credit.
