Roeder added to the list of scapegoats for Shepherd's shortcomings

Another manager goes, another will come, and still there is only one factor consistent with every period of disappointment. Freddy Shepherd may think he can get away with forcing a manager out as soon as the grapes turn sour, but these days the average Newcastle fan seems to know exactly who is responsible for our recent plight, and who should also be shown the exit.

It was an eyebrow-raiser when we gave Roeder the full time post in the first place; sure he did very well as caretaker but I think many fans were hoping for someone with more of a proven track record. Roeder however continued to defy his critics, propelling us back in to European football and salvaging a season one Graeme Souness had practically murdered. Yet Freddy Shepherd was apparently not convinced enough to give Roeder the proper backing he needed.

In January especially there was a real need to bring some players in - full backs topped the agenda, but no permanent deals arrived, just one unproven loanee. To me this suggests that Roeder did not have the board's full confidence.

There is no sign of Shepherd accepting any responsibility and once again I'm sure he will come out and tell us he is the club's biggest fan and wants to turn it around. Sadly, unless he appoints some sort of messiah who will be able to completely turn the club's fortunes around single handedly I fear we will find ourselves back at square one again (again).

As I can't see any way he is going to leave, I am left with only the vague hope that he does make such an appointment; whether that's Allardyce or not is a separate debate. Until then, we will be left to reflect on another hugely disappointing season, and one which provided no rewards for our continued support.
