Newcastle's Keegan - one Gooners view
Posted by Martin in Arsenal, Newcastle | 18 January 2008
It was only last October, when, in an interview with Gabby Logan, Keegan clearly stated that he'd never manage a team again. So why the "U" turn?
Cynics might argue that a £8m contract is good enough reason (Id take the money!), but for Kevin there's got to be more to it!
In the interview, he's clear that "Geordies want good football", don't we all? But of late, that's not a label associated with Newcastle. Perhaps his frustration and knowledge of his own capabilities is enough to think he can restore the teams fortunes. The fans certainly see him as their saviour.
In my view, Keegan's move back into football management is no bad thing for English football, (perhaps not so great for Arsenal!) Too few teams are willing to play the kind of attacking football that makes the game inspiring and great to watch. Yes I want my team to win, but I also want to see entertaining football and when I go to a match, I'd like to feel I got value for money. Fortunately for me, Arsenal rarely disappoint there!
So, with the Gunners set to play Newcastle twice in rapid succession later this month, with Kevin in charge, these games could be very different.
With less than two weeks left before the transfer window closes, it's unlikely that Keegan will be able to change the side dramatically as to make a big difference. Though apparently he's vying for Defoe and Wes Brown! But his very presence will have an impact.
So, the question is, in another 3 months will Keegan decide that he's had enough and quit again?
And, will we see Michael Owen on the transfer market, given their past relationship woes?
Interesting times ahead!

Canny Article. Apart from the current top two playing good football the rest of the Premiership is tactical dross. Football needs Keegan as much as Newcastle do. It is going to take time to see any form of transformation but as a toon fan I am looking forward to it. Just one point about the Gabby Logan thing. It is another case of the press being selective with the information. If you look further into the past you will find that what Keegan originally said was that he would not manage Newcastle again as long as certain board members remained at the club. Well we can only guess that that was Shepherd because as soon as he left, Keegan returned.
If I recall, Arsenal's record vs Keegan's teams is quite good. I seem to remember a Gunners 5-1 demolition of City at Maine Rd a few years back when he was manager there. Post-match he basically admitted that he had tried to out-attack Arsenal and had failed dismally. Keegan may bring excitement, but Newcastle's problems start with their leaky defence and I'm not sure he's the right plumber for the job.
