Newcastle's first signing was one of the most important

Earlier in the week Shay Given commited himself to Newcastle until 2011, news which without doubt will delight every single United fan.

Its fair to say I was quite worried that we might lose Given. Although he loves the club and the fans, he is a 'keeper that deserves accolades, success and trophies. I wouldn't have blamed him if he did decide to move clubs.

As far as I'm concerned he is the best in the Premier League at the moment. I've lost count of the amount of times he has pulled it out the bag to keep us in a game, and we owe him for many of our Premier League points. Ever dependant, it was vital that we signed him up for as long as possible, because I can't think of anyone within our reach that we could have replaced him with (no discredit to Steve Harper of course, who has done a sterling job for the club, and has a remarkable record of sub appearances).

Given is ambitious, which makes me think he would not have signed if he didn't feel Roeder and the club had plans over the summer to take the club forward, which is relieving, as despite last summers transfer activity there is still work to be done.

Well done to the club for getting Shay to put pen on paper, and thanks to Shay for showing unrivalled loyalty to the fans, because he deserves trophies and medals, something his Newcastle career has sadly not been able to give him.
