Newcastle Utd - The rot must stop today

Posted by JamesB in Newcastle | 26 November 2006

It's been said a few weeks in a row now sadly, but todays game against Portsmouth is one we really need to pick up three points from. It is apparent that our home crowds patience is running thin - attendances are down and many of those who are going to the games are making their feelings clear. This is actually something that disappoints me slightly, but that is a separate issue. The point is these fans have to be made to shut up by a good team performance.

With Dyer back now I think we definitely can produce this. A slightly blunt attack over recent weeks should not be a problem any more as Dyer adds a bit of pace and flair. He showed it against Arsenal with a great goal and as long as he can stay fit (God forbid any more injuries) he should be a real plus for us.

Martins returns today as well after not being rushed back against the win against Celta, which is nice. Despite a few people writing him off (I know, ridiculous) I expect him to cause problems left right and centre with his pace, and hopefully the goals will start coming in. I'd like to see him playing with confidence on the shoulder of the defence, rather than coming to collect. His chance at Middlesbrough where he hit the bar demonstrated exactly what we should be doing with him. Ball over the top or on the ground between defenders, his pace and finishing should do the rest.

I couldn't care less however if we have to scrap a win today. We just need three points to get the ball rolling, especially at home. Then we can start thinking about salvaging something from our awful start to the season in the league.
