Newcastle fans must have patience with Roeder

The end of Newcastle's unspectacular season certainly has a very blunt "end of season" feeling to it, with little to play for, plenty of low scoring matches and nothing to hope for other than a top half finish. Despite the current predicament we find ourselves in, I am once again disappointed at the amount of stick the manager has received.
Don't get me wrong - our league position is not acceptable and the manager does have to take some responsibility for this, which he does. However, there is little he can do about injuries, notably the absence of one Michael Owen all season. Having Owen back for next year will do us a world of good; a partnership with Martins, who has for me been very impressive in his first season, will scare the life out of opposition defences. Furthermore, fans should not forget about the job Roeder did last season, catapulting us in to 7th place and giving fans a chance to dig out their passports this season. One can not just write off a manager who achieved this and simply focus on results that have since gone against us.
Last summer I felt it was evident that Roeder did not have the complete support of Shepherd, who decided to cut costs after giving Graeme Souness what seemed to be a blank cheque book. The signings Roeder has made however have all been shrewd moves, as I said Martins has been particularly impressive. Any sort of backing in the summer from the chairman, coupled with the return of Owen and the likes and we are already looking at challenging for a UEFA Cup spot.
Fans who boo and jeer and call for the manager's head must also remember that it was the same behaviour that got us here in the first place. I can't lie and pretend Souness deserved to keep his job, but many fans never gave him the chance and ultimately it was that feeling of doom and gloom that surrounded the place that caused Shepherd to eventually sack him. Roeder earned his chance at the job, and those fans who constantly call for the sacking of managers should be careful what they wish for.
Obviously there is a limit to everyone's patience and I think it will be fair to be disappointed with Roeder next season if we find ourselves in a similar situation to this season. I am however fully confident that this will not be the case, based on the performances of last season, the summer ahead and the return of Owen. Although it is disappointing I don't think the fans should be on the back of the manager at this stage of the season, it is just counter-productive.
I personally find it shocking that fans are so ready to jump on the manager-out-bandwagon, and I hope there are other fans out there that feel the same way. As most sensible fans have reiterated, continuity is the key to building for the future - chopping and changing tends to just bring you back to square one, and for this reason, coupled with the fact that there is nothing to suggest Roeder can not do a good job for us, the supporters, who are the heart of this club, must stay on the side of the manager and his team in order to move forward.

you are bloody joking, this guys team selections especially when he's had somewhere near a full squad have been diabolical, the balance of the team is all wrong, and one has to wonder about his ability to motivate.
Spot on.
i think what people forget is who was assisting roeder last year?? i think that guy, whoever he was, had a hell of a lot of influence over the teams performances, whereas now it's left to roeder to inspire the team, which is exactly what he can't do. he is tactically inept and he's only done well this year when he's been forced to play a team due to horrendous injuries. the majority of those have cleared up over the past few months and the guy still cannot get the team selection correct. god help us next year when he will have a bigger squad to pick from. i say he should go at the end of the season, before we give him any serious £ to spend, start the season poorly and shepherd swings the axe. the fans are no fools, we realise that roeder isn't the man for the job. nice guy he may be, but he'll never be a man we require. the question is, who do we get in? or more precisely who will come?!
Sir,
For your comments it would give me the greatest pleasure to give you a damn good thrashing, However pugilism is out of bounds to buddhists!
Roeder Out! Shepherd out!
Out of your mind defending Roeder??????? Why!!!
Like he was saying "motivate"
Roeder dos not know what that is. Take Luque for example after Parma game. He didn’t even start the next game. Come on
"coupled with the fact that there is nothing to suggest Roeder can not do a good job for us,"
Sorry but where were you when Birmingham came to SJP ?
There are so many reasons to suggest that Roeder is not capable of doing a good job apart from a 5 - 1 hammering at home to a Championship team, Sheff United at home, Man City at home, Bolton at home etc etc
If you wanted Roeder's abilities summed up in one performance it was Alkmaar away. Everything to play for yet his team didnt turn up.
Please do not be deluded by Owens injury into thinking Roeder has any claim to be "management material". He's had three previous managerial roles and each one ended with the club relegated or having to apply for re election.
