Irrational jeers from Newcastle 'faithful' continue to hinder progress

Posted by JamesB in Newcastle | 24 November 2007

It is times like this when I wonder why on earth my beloved club has a reputation for having good support. Big crowds, yes. But what good is a big crowd that boos, jeers, and tells the manager he “doesn’t know what he’s doing” every time something goes wrong?

In all seriousness, I think some fans are turning this club in to a laughing stock with their current performances.

As a club, we are going through a huge transition period after a disastrous era of decline following the sacking of Sir. Bobby Robson. We have never recovered from Freddy Shepherd’s impatience, but since then we have certainly started taking steps in the right direction. Allardyce is a very capable manager with good ideas, the right ambition and a long term vision for the team. In Mike Ashley and Chris Mort we have a more patient, realistic team at the top, who want the club to progress at a sustainable, continuous pace.

But it seems the fans miss Freddy Shepherd’s irrationality and want to try and continue his good work by forcing the manager our prematurely. Discontent of course is only natural, and at times, justified. But booing the team every time we concede a goal, or every time you don’t quite agree with the manager’s decision is simply counter productive. Seeing and hearing fans hurling abuse at Sam Allardyce for taking N’Zogbia off (who incidentally had offered absolutely nothing anyway) made me feel slightly sick, and very embarrassed. It certainly made me glad I missed the game today.

Let’s look at the bigger picture. Going in to today’s game we were 11th in the table. By no means spectacular, but similarly not a disaster bearing in mind where we ended up last season. We have come against one of the better teams in the country, and been outclassed, which is always disappointing. But I don’t think the contest would have degenerated in to such a one-sided affair had the fans not got on the team’s back immediately after going behind.

I’ve been trying to put my views on this to the back of my mind for a while now, hoping that the boos will stop and the fans will have a bit more patience. But it has gone on for so long now that I fear the worst; we will be stuck in mid-table going round in circles. Or, god forbid, even worse.

Fans should remember that progress is gradual. It took a lot of hard work by Shepherd, Souness and other clowns to get us in to this predicament, and it will take a lot of hard work to get us out of it. But by turning on the boos at every opportunity it is the fans who will eventually lose out. We will end up losing the best manager we have had in a while, players will get fed up, and we will be back to square one. Give it time, have patience, and get behind the team.

I have to say that I'm not agree if you tell the boo boys are doing wrong. You know how hard they have to live everyday, and hoping to have something to cheer about every weekend, which is hardly to get so far.

Sorry Allardyce is not good enough.
His team selection and tactics are terrible.
Time for change. Before we end up in a relegation fight.

I agree we can be a very fickle bunch sometimes but the flip side to that coin is that we tend to know more about the game and how it should be played in Newcastle than any of the last 3 managers we have had here at SJP.

Is it wrong to show our discontent when we watch our side roll over yet again at home. Sam Allardyce has a good reputation for his work off the pitch but his reputation with tactics and what goes on whilst on the pitch is Sunday League.

How much time should we give Allardyce? Shall we wait until he's had time to fill our team with Abdoulaye Faye's and Rozenhals whilst ridding us of those "modern football" misfits like Milner who dare to bring an attacking and creative mind to training.

I personaly don't care if Sam turns us into a Champions League side in 5 years. I don't want to watch 5 years of statistics football or punt it and hope as it's otherwise known.

Whilst I'm sure he's doing wonders off the pitch with his army of staff, being the manager of a team means his only focus should be on winning or at least trying to win the games we play.

Bottom line is, Sam will not get any better. This is how he wants the team to play and he's far too stubborn to change it.

At least he could admit when he fails but he just blames the players. You could see that 5-3-2 line up was never going to work before a ball was kicked. That's why he got stick from the fans.

Get shot of him before he sells our creative players for more yellow card magnets.

Your comments are an insult to everyone in SJP.We aren't booing for the sake of it,we can ALL see how stupid BSA is being with his tactics/formation/selection.The fans, the press,EVERYONE.It's schoolboy stuff tbfh, yet you can't see it?
"Progress is gradual".Of course it is.We aren't progressing,we were better under GR.Every fan in the ground, with the exception of you it seems, can see why things are so bad.Time won't give BSA anything. He thinks he knows what he's doing and this is how it will be.He ain't gonna change. He doesn't know how to play to win. He's scared of every other team int he league ffs.If that's good enough for you then sweet, have fun watchin a totally disjointed, unfocused, uninspired, unambitious team.BSA 4 England!

Allardyce is looking like someone who's come off the street and picked the team.

Without performances or results he'll have a short reign at SJP -the shorter the better!

Think yourself lucky you missed the game or you would understand the madness of Sams decisions.

Why take of N'zogbia, who admittedly did little, but more than Smith, and then put Milner on the left as a straight swap when all game it was clear we needed a man on the right.

Geremi was awful. Enrique was a young player whose confidence drained as the belief evaporated, then take him off with 10 mins to go and replace a left back with a peg legged right back ... why! So he can be used as a scaped goat by BSA no doubt.

I've been all over watching the toon... seen many poor performances ... stood and watched the wembley surrender ... have I seen worse ideas about tactics ... i don't think I have!!

What systems was it today ... perhaps only BSA knows ... anyway it was a formation to try and hold a draw and possibly score on the break ... if i'm being charitable about the tactics. Clueless ... if you give teams so much space to play in they are bound to look good... and despite the score Liverpool aren't great. Yes 3-0 flattered us ... Torres could and should have hit 6 alone ... but the team is down and unless it changes soon ... out!!

Time for Mr Ashley to prove he is a genuine businessman and knows what to do when your asset is going down the pan. Yes Sam may have some good ideas but tactically he'd struggle in the 1950's. Ship him out, or move him into an upstairs role ... and bering on somebody who understands tactics.

We can but dream of Jose ... he's actually been there and done it ... Sams just talked about it. Time to break the bank Mike

I've only read the title and I can't be bothered reading the actual article as from the title alone I can tell you're an idiot. Irrational jeers? Tell me how being annoyed at conceding 7 goals in two consecutive home games is irrational? I really wanted Allardyce to be the man but you don't need 'time' to see that he doesn't know what he is doing. Tactically he has made some (consistently) astonishing decisions and player selection is the same. I don't know what the solution is or what I want to happen next but this can't go on. If Allardyce carries on like he is at the moment then maybe yet another manager is the only answer.

I feel newcastle fans turn up week in week out home and away and have to watch that rubbish.
I cant understand sams tactics playing players out of position and bringing the better players off,
Geremi for me today just didnt know where he was playing, how he stayed on is beyond me.?

The fans have every right to vent their feelings. Allardyce is just so wrong for Newcastle United. Todays performance was the equal if not worse than anything in the Souness era.

I'm sorry but there is NO WAY those jeers were irrational. I usually have patience and quite a positive frame of mind when it comes to managers, but his tactics, substitutions and insistence on playing players in the wrong positions have made me feel at best bewildered and at worse Fuckin furious. There was NO-ONE on our right hand side for the majority of the game, despite Nicky Butt and 50,000 geordies screaming it. We played deeper than Barry Whites voice god rest his soul and as far as I counted had no shots on target.

And how can he justify bringing Milner on IN PLACE OF N'ZOGBIA ON THE LEFT??

No balance anywhere, we looked like we didn't know what we were doing, no shots on target, no crosses into the box, NO WIDTH...EVERYONE WATCHING could see the problems...... AND WE'VE PLAYED THIS WAY FOR ALMOST EVERY GAME THIS SEASON, and we hadn't played any of the big boys till now.

To be honest, he really doesn't know what he's doing, hence the chant. The scousers were laughing at us for the whole game and it sure as hell wasn't because of us fans, it was the tactically inept shite we churned out in front of them.

But don't worry mate, I'll make sure I'll applaud politely next time this sort of performance happens.

Oh jolly good, it's Blackburn away!... tally ho, we better not play as flamboyant as we do at home... make sure we get a clean sheet eh?

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
