Liverpool FC: New Signings Summary

Raphael Benitez has had a successful summer so far. He has brought in a number of players that should address the weaknesses that were left in the team after 2 years of rebuilding work, and provide us with a number of different options from those we had last year:

Gabrial Paletta: Will provide some cover for the centre backs. I know he has made a few mistakes in pre-season but he’s only a young lad that can’t even speak the language yet. It has also been shown over the last few years that it takes a while to get to understand Rafa’s ideas when it comes to defending at Liverpool, so with that taken into consideration he has looked very good and strong. Not afraid of a tackle and I fully expect that after a year behind Hyypia and Carragher he will prove a vital addition to the squad.

Fabio Aurelio: Looks very impressive in the few games he played. Always injury prone, he is clearly a very clever and skilful left sided player that-while I don’t expect him to be a regular in the starting line up- is likely to be able to add something to change a game. I expect Rafa to use him like Garcia was often used this year, by bringing him on and letting him confuse the hell out of the players he runs rings around. Similarly his set piece ability should add another interesting dimension.

Jermaine Pennant: Could well turn out to be a fantastic buy, although I have to admit we paid a little over what I expected for him. He has looked very good in pre-season and has worked as hard as anyone I’ve seen. His ability to beat players and put in cross after cross should be very interesting, and you can’t under-estimate the value of freeing up Gerrard to move back into the Central Midfield role.

Craig Bellamy: Comes with the pace and tenacity we are all aware of, and has great close control. I can see him being deployed down the right hand side occasionally this year when we are playing a little narrower. The way he has linked up with Fowler at Wrexham and again in Switzerland has looked very useful and the 15 goal a season target given to him by Benitez looks very achievable.
