Liverpool FC: The end of Silly Season as we know it?
Posted by Akzoony in Liverpool | 2 January 2007
Ah how nice it is this January to be able to sit back and watch other clubs scrambling around for players. We Liverpool fans have the luxury this year of being able to stretch out safe and comfortable in the knowledge that the silly rumours spread around by various Journos to sell papers are just that! Silly rumours!
Crouch to Newcastle? Ha! Alonso to Real? I think not! Reina back to sunny Spain? Not a chance.
The simple truth is that we now have a squad with the potential to do great things. Ive said it before and Ill say it again, Rafa had to rebuild an unbalanced squad on limited resources, but now it has been completed 2006 should be the last year in which we were forced to bring in a plethora of new faces.
Now dont get me wrong, every side needs fresh talent to come in to stay at the top, but as we have seen this year too many can bring about as much of a negative effect as a positive. Finally we are where we have needed to be for a long time; in a position to bring in the odd one or two higher profile (and cost) players to add a new element to the side.
A quick glance at this years squad shows weve a top class set of Strikers with height, strength, pace and experience, one of the best midfields in the country, two wingers that are young, have bags of potential and are finally starting to show what they can do, a couple of flair players, a rock solid defence and a plethora of top notch keepers.
Sure we could do with some cover at right back, and maybe a new holding midfielder to replace Zenden at some point but theres not a lot Id change there. All we need now is to let the squad grow (in experience), let relationships continue to develop and see where we end up.
We dont yet have the finances to bring in the likes of David Villa (touted this week), but given our current strike force as well as recent experiences with Morrientes and Shevchenko at Chelski is that such a bad thing?
This month I would be surprised if we bring in more than a right back and few more youngsters to continue to bolster our impressive youth team. For me Neil and Upson are the most likely new faces around the place but I wont be at all surprised if Rafa pulls something special out of the bag again.
Anything other than that and we can just sit back and smile as we listen to the Rumour mill purr away in the background!

I fully agree.
It is January and we are highly unlikely to off load any first team players especially a player like Xabi Alonso. There have been reports of Reina possibly moving but I think the summer will maybe see him leave, but January is a tough transfer window.
I think if we get a good offer for Crouch we may sell up, the only players I can see maybe leaving would be the likes of Zenden, Dudek, Warnock - fringe players.
Coming in I can't believe the reports about David Beckham. I also wouldn't want Matthew Upson either, but Lucas Neill is quite a decent player and could arrive on the cheap.
I have heard we have been sniffing around Ashley Young at Watford and David James at Pompey. If Reina went to Spain as part of a possible David Villa, James wouldn't be such a bad cover. Ashley Young isn't bad, but I can't see him at Anfield.
We need a decent Right Back, Lucas Neill would be a good deal. He can tackle and can pick a pass well as well.
Warnock, Dudek and Zenden can all go, Paletta can go out on loan and gain valuble experiance in La Liga, even if like Scott Carson, he plays in a failing team.
david villa will play for liverpool and mascherrano aswell there mates and were spotted at the lfc vs arsenal match
I'll be honest Craig no real suprises. The Mascherrano deal seems to be done, it's just all down to Fifa now.
And David Villa's mates with a bunch of the Liverpool players so its no suprise for him or his mates being at the game! If we do get him it will be in the Summer after the investment goes through and Robbie is out of contract (and off to the states!?!?)
