A New Hero for Liverpool FC?
Posted by Akzoony in Liverpool | 25 September 2007
Its been some time since I was inspired to write on here. Much has gone by since my last article but tonight how can I not say anything.
It has been many years since I had a true hero at Liverpool. Robbie Fowler was my last number 1. His enthusiasm and love for the club as well as an ability to score extraordinary goals meant that he was always the one player I truly adored growing up. McManaman was always a close second because of his flair but since those heady entertaining days I have never truly passionately loved a player.
Yes Gerrard is supreme and one of the best players in the world. I admire him more than any other for his work rate, his ability his skill and talent but a number of factors have kept me from truly keeping him close to my heart.
Carra is Liverpool through and through. He takes the feelings I had for Razer Ruddock (I always loved the often quoted he would run through a brick wall for his club) in pure passion and true embodiment of LFC to impossibly high new levels but unfortunately due to his position and lack of flair he cannot excite my imagination in the way that Robbie or Maca always could.
Fernando Torres looks to have finally taken over as Robbies replacement in my heart.
His ability to score from impossible situations so early in his LFC career just bemuses me every time. His third goal tonight (his first hat-trick for the club) just underlines my point. He took the ball at a snails pace right up to Readings Keeper- all of the excuses I have ready after many similar failed attempts by LFC strikers over the last few years went through my mind and just confidently and without undue arrogance slipped it to his left and lazily passed it into the open goal.
This in a game where he had received no protection from an awful referee who allowed him to be kicked over the park from as early as the 3rd minute where a lesser player would have walked off the park injured.
Torres just kept on going taking continual punishment and just getting stuck in again and again.
We have had many occasions in the recent past where players are likened to other famous names from around the world. It is not a practice I like and not one I have done before. Tonight however I have to join in.
I know it is early days but I think it is fair to say that Fernando Torres is the most talented Striker we have had at the club since Ian Rush.
Aldridge was an amazing replacement until Rushs famous return however failed to provide the same cover and work over the whole park in the way that Rushy did. Robbie scored many outstanding goals and is probably the best predator we have ever had but still did not have the natural ability to give what Rush gave all over the park. Owen had a great talent but never reached 20 goals in the Premiership and left in a way I will never be able to forgive.
Torres seems to just have it all- and at such a young age.
I am too young to have seen Dalglish at his best live but I have seen everything I can and in my opinion he is rightly considered the best we have ever had. Rushy is my best centre forward by far but in Fernando Torres finally I feel we have a potential replacement. It will take him at least a decade to achieve what Rushy did and even begin to take the place we have in our hearts for him-let alone his place in the history books-, but I can honestly say I am excited in a way that I have not felt for many years.

I'm fairly surprised at this write up. Torres is good for sure, but a hat trick at Reading can't surely prove anything just yet. I mean, Adebayor scored a well-taken hat trick versus Derby, but I don't think he's going to be the next Henry...
Apart frm king kenny i think that stevie g is da bst lfc player in history wat do u think
well with the last game of the season over i think the proof is in the pudding. 23 goals in his first season of english football equalling Ruud Van Nistelrooy's record. This kid can only go from strength to strength and although he has only just begun his Liverpool career i can definately see this being a fruitful one. He certainly has all the attributes to become a liverpool legend. We have some amazing talent emerging especially Ryan Babel he is definately one to keep your eye on!! Im gonna put my neck on the line and say if there is anyone who can draw comparisons with Thierry Henry, it is him. The Future is definately bright for the Reds!
