The Passing Fad

The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them. Ernest Hemingway

So, another great result for Everton and our best home league run since the days of Colin Harvey. This leaves us handily placed and if all goes to plan at least an Intertoto finish should now beckon. Several of our players have 'stepped up to the plate' (not in a Billy Wright sense) in recent months but it seems like a good time to single out James McFadden for some special praise.

His goal to open the scoring was excellent yesterday, following up an even better goal with his other foot last week. His back-heel for Cahill's 2nd was also inspired. He seems to be playing with a renewed sense of belief and is even knocking people like Olaf Mellberg around in the cause as well. Tam-o-shanters off to you Faddy.

And having gone seemingly years without scoring a decent goal, Everton's bid to dominate March's Goal of the Month continued with 3 more beauties.

The Blues were probably slightly less impressive than last week and the double whammy of Arteta going off and the odious but impressive Lee Hendrie coming on meant it got pretty hairy for a while. Wright still appears to instil panic in his defenders and Davie Weir was showing signs of the kind of wobbles which dogged him (not in the Stan Collymore sense) earlier in the season. Moyesy may consider a Yobo/Stubbs partnership once we've got the derby out of the way?

A special mention for the Villa fans yesterday. Benny hats off for their assortment of inane chants - 'You'll never work again'', 'We're gonna win 4-3', '3-0 and you still don't sing','Eas-y, Eas-y' and the timeless classic ' Let him Doy', when Leon was down injured. Inspired. If only they WERE actually being ironic.

Tellingly though, they did slag off O'Leary for much of the game. The mind does play tricks but we didn't even plumb those depths when Mike Walker was presiding over the disaster that was the start of the 94/5 season. O'Leary surpassed himself by moaning loads after the game. What a guy.

The coming week on Real Life Blues will focus on the derby, along with a look at those bothersome FA Cup Quarters and all other things about this great game we don't call soccer.

Now it's off to watch more Commonwealth Games action. Does anybody else think it's dodgy to have a 'clean and jerk' in Women's Weightlifting, and just plain wrong to talk about the women's 'snatch'?

I don't think any of our defenders have confidence in the Dickie Wright. Such a weak, feeble effort to stop their goal on Saturday. A decent keeper is a must for the summer (as well as a couple of decent strikers).

Come on lads for Saturday - let's hope we can get stuck in like in recent weeks to give a good account of ourselves.

Wise words Cat man.

You've got the transfer activity pretty well sown up. We know from our experiences in the past 20 years that a good keeper is vital to any team's success. With Schwarzer and Jaaskelainen possibly available, we should get someone. Old Jussi would have to smarten up his act though, scruffy get.
