A small team like Everton?
Posted by DavidM in Everton, Liverpool, Rafa Benitez | 4 February 2007
Oh dear, poor old Rafa has insulted half of Merseyside with his comment after the Liverpool derby that 'small' teams come to Anfield and sit back, and Everton being one of them.
Understandably the blue half is a bit miffed about being called a small team.
Alan Shearer tried to excuse Rafa suggesting he meant clubs outside the top 4.
So was it a limited grasp of English or does Benitez see his derby opponents as small fry?

What suggests that Everton are a big club now? They were a big club 15 years ago - but then so where Nottingham Forrest. When was the last time Everton won something? Everton are nowhere near a big club.
David MOyes himself, on the Everton official website, before the game said that Liverpool play in a different level of football team, a higher one. So what's all this fuss now that Rafa said 'smaller' not 'small'. He was simply confirming what Moyes said. Why all this fuss and hypocrisy now?
Boring Boring Liverpool. No doubt they'll take their own expansive game to the Camp Nou next week? Scandanavian fans, American owners and a fat Spanish waiter for a manager. Let us know next time you get a point off us, glory hunters.
Everton will always be a big club
But for being cheated out of Europe by a bunch of red assasins at Hysel Everton would be a lot bigger
what rafa mean is club outside the big 4 alway try to get a draw at anfield. That's all. Everton is not a small club, but surely is smaller enough than the big 4..
Small club? founder members of football league/ only 4 seasons out of top flight football, (no-one else has been in top division over 100 years)/ Champions more years than anyone else,/senior Merseyside club/ History and fanbase most clubs can only dream of.
No-one in their right mind could call Everton a small club, and as far as I know, no-one who knows anything about football ever has done so.
Finally a history lesson to LFC fans, we were the first team to play at Anfield, the first team to have a badge featuring the liver bird, (both of these are hand-me-downs which you still wear to this day), also, if John Houlding had his own way in 1892, you would have called yourselves Everton, and played in blue, but the league wouldnt allow it. (so even your teams colours are only second choice).
for those glory hunter liverfool fan, what did you do to Chelsea and Juventus when you played them a couple of years back at their ground? Your fat arsse spanish waiter manager is such a sore loser. Do you still dream of winning the league? By when? Dream on... it will always just be a dream
I was wondering how long it would take one of our well educated Everton supporting bretheren to mention Heysel. What they always choose to forget is that all of the English clubs where punished, especially Liverpool (rightly so. However they all managed to still perform and in the case of Man U improve over those years. Stop using Liverpool FC as an excuse for your poor perfomances since then and stop wallowing in self pity. Everton are a small club in terms of the current league. For Liverpool/Everton think Barcelona/Espanyol, the game will always mean more to Everton because of this mentality. Get over it!!!
If any Everton fans reading this would like to write on Real Life News about the club, please get in touch.
We've got Akzoony commenting on all things Liverpool so it would be great to get a blue's view.
Like I said on my blog; it was 3-0 on aggregate, to the small team.
If Everton are not a small football club what are they?
One trophy in 20 years of football equates to them being pretty small in the grand scheme of things. When your cup final is the two league games against you local rival you need to consider yourself small.
Funny how the RedShite have taken it upon themselves to define "Big" teams. I suppose the £100's millions they've spent trying to assemble a team to win the Premier League since its inception, and failing every season, makes them a big club. Oh, and all their amazing fans from erm.. Wigan, Norway, darn Sarf, Asia..well anywhere but Liverpool. Still, this time next week they'll have sold out to the sub-Glazer multi-bankrupt Gillett and then they can be even "Bigger" than us in terms of debt. 4 points to the Peoples Club. You sad, bitter Scandinavians.
Really? Fans from other parts of the world except from Liverpool? Well then, there must be something wrong with the locals supporting Everton.
Firstly, the supposed debt that Liverpool has is only being mentioned because of the take over news in the media... Don't Everton have debts? And if you're that big Otis P. Redshitenberger, then why dun Everton ATTEMPT to win the league instead of fighting relegation every alternate season? Liverpool's not called the top 4 by the MEDIA for nothing.
And for your information, The Sub-Glazers have a combined wealth larger than the one family of Glazers. And the sub-Glazers are probably the wisest of people. Obviously, they did not choose Everton (Nor did any other consortium or owner). I wonder why?...I bet u wished Abramovic had made u the Evertonski??
I must agree, Everton isn't small given its history... the People's club? Yeah, just like Kournikova of Tennis. All Glam, No medals.
RedTooth, you might want to check out your new owners history and wealth. Unlike DIC, which nearly took over at LFC and who are exceedingly cash rich, Gillett and Hicks have bought Liverpool through a series of finances almost identical to the way the Glazers bought Man U.
Without boring you with the financial minutae of what this involves, it basically means that they pay off part of the LFC debt through new borrowing offset against the new ground - like a big mortgage. A ground which they only have to part-fund.
So before you rejoice at your pots of cash, just remember, a sell-out is just that. They're not philanthropists or fans - they're businessmen. And for the record, I would not welcome investors into my club whose finances resembled a rather unsteady house of cards.
Redtooth,
someone told me that your new owner Gillet is a liar to his "franchises" in the US telling them that there's no money to improve the teams. and now he has come up with all this money to invest in you EPL Title-less team.
So mack's comment actually compliment this thing that I heard.
Hmm... so you lots not just "don't know your history", but also don't bother to find out more about your future. Good stuff!!!
I see the good ol' US owners have already refered to Liverpool as 'Liverpool Reds' and as a 'Franchise'. What with admitting that they are looking at stadium naming rights the first 48 hours has been a little inglorious. Sad that Shankly had the famous "This Is Anfield" sign erected to intimidate the opposition and that could now be replaced by "Welcome to The Budweiser Arena". Oh well, its only the heritage of the club. Liverpool Reds? I have my worries.
everton are a big club look it up the facts are there
