McClaren - is Derby County more his level?

I read on TeamTalk tonight that Derby County are looking at a shortlist of candidates to fill the manager's position vacated by Billy Davies. And one of those could be ex-England manager Steve McClaren.
Now I don't know if McClaren is really likely to take the role but it says something for the calibre of manager we had in charge of the England set-up that the first club his name is linked to is the favourite for relegation from the Premiership. Not one of the top European clubs or another international team.
If I remember coreectly, when Sven left the same role his name was linked to a host of prestigious teams. Or maybe that was just because Derby had a manager at the time!

No matter who Eriksson's name was linked to, he pitched up at Manchester City - hardly one of England's, never mind Europe's prestigious clubs.
MacClaren is a good coach - he showed it back when DCFC had Wanchope et al setting the PL alight, and with him, Man Utd achieved their best ever, winning an unprecedented treble, including the CL - something they have failed to do since his departure.
But I digress, why would a coach of MacClaren's proven calibre not wish to go to a club like DCFC? They have the pedigree, the history, the fans and the potential to become something much bigger than half of the current PL. Short on two things, quality of current playing staff, and the funds with which to replace them. You of short memory - where exactly did Man City finish last year? (May I add, under the tutelage of one of the candidates to replace SMc, one certain Stuart Pearce?)
