Chelsea: We're the Fulham Road Supporters...

Posted by Seb in Chelsea | 23 September 2007

It's a funny old game isn't it? To be perfectly frank, I wasn't expecting a better result at Old Trafford tonight.

I don't think many of us were. A situation that brings about references to the famous Soviet purges of the 1920's and 30's can't be expected to be resolved within 5 days, no matter how much spin Abramovich, Grant and company put on it. Us, as fans, don't really know what's going on so to speak. There's been a lot of hush-hush surrounding the departure of a certain Portuguese, understandably, and many rumours have circled Stamford Bridge like a round of Russian roulette.

However, in stark contrast to my earlier, somewhat knee-jerk post to certain feelings which just boiled over the edge, this is a testament to the great game which we all adore. As Old Trafford tonight, the 'Theatre of Dreams' as it were, was home to the noise of little else than blue clad men, women and children singing as if they didn't have a care in the world. The fans who made the long trip up to Manchester gave us all reason to count our blessings and thank whatever it was that allowed us to support Chelsea Football Club. Despite the turmoil that has engulfed everyone involved with the club, these people shined out like beacons of hope to the rest of us, and gave most of us a prompt reminder that supporting a football club isn't about damning the team when the chips are down, or moaning when a certain decision doesn't go the way we want it to. It's about following the club over land and sea (and Leicester), about devotion and support, about giving hope and comfort to the players when the clouds hang over them.

After all, if it wasn't for many of these people, then we perhaps wouldn't have the Chelsea we have today. I'm referring to of course the people who attended the games in the late 70's and early 80's, the men who stood on the crumbling terraces week after week, the men who compiled the biggest away following the 2nd division had ever seen, who proudly followed their club everywhere they went. The men who watched as Clive Walker struck against Bolton Wanderers to save the Blues at the death from a potentially fatal relegation to division three.

The heart and soul of Chelsea FC isn't Jose Mourinho or Roman Abramovich. It's not about getting rid of Avram Grant and installing a decent manager, and it certainly doesn't consist of the players. The heart and soul of Chelsea, or any football club for that matter, is the fans. A bit obvious I realise, but as the main benefactor of Chelsea it is our duty, as fans, to support them when the (forgive me) going gets tough. If we just moan and berate the club for not doing what we want all the time, then we can hardly be considered supporters, can we?

try Nightschool. It's shone, not shined, dopey. And by the way; I went to Stamford Bridge many times in the seventies and even the sixties. Chelsea had quality home-grown players in those good old days. This Chelsea team has been acquired. say goodbye to it.
