Chelsea players core to England squad

Posted by DavidM in Chelsea, England | 13 September 2006

Chelsea are the one team in English football that has the money to buy the best players in the world. So it's quite flattering to this country's talent that there is a strong backbone of English players in the Chelsea squad.

Captain John Terry, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Wright-Phillips, Wayne Bridge and now Ashley Cole are not just fringe players at the club, they are core to it's success.

They are also England regulars, so what does it mean for the national squad to have so many players at one club?

On the one hand, it could prove beneficial as a core set of players gain experience playing together at club level.

However, the England team has suffered from club-based cliques in the squad before, mainly between Arsenal, Liverpool and Man United players.

The danger is that with such a large number of first team players in one club, there could be problems between the Chelsea and non-Chelsea players. I don't necessarily mean arguments or deliberate unpleasantness. But if the Chelsea players are used to working together in one system, with one style of play, it may be difficult for the team to function properly if McClaren wants to work it differently.

This is something McClaren needs to be conscious of as he leads the team to Euro 2008.
