O'Neill Can Do So Much Better.....
Posted by Jasper Reed in Aston Villa | 4 August 2006
According to reports, Martin O'Neill is about to end his football exile by agreeing to manage Aston Villa.
Why?
We hear so much about 'massive' clubs. Like City, Spurs and Sheffield Wednesday Villa are not. Not anymore. A big ground does not make a big club. Fans will say they have won the European Cup but so did Forest.....does that make them bigger than Chelsea, bigger than Arsenal?
Assuming MON's wife is in better health and he wants to get back to work, surely there are better jobs having just gone, or soon in the offing, than the poison chalice at Villa Park. The talk is of takeovers and Deadly Doug being on his way, but what if that doesnt happen, or doesnt happen until after the transfer window has closed?
Even if he does have a budget and time to spend it, where does he start? There isnt a player in the Villa line up who would walk into any other Premier League team. The very best he can hope for is keep the team above water until January and splash out then, but if thats the case why not wait until January to take over?
By then, a better offer may well have arisen. There is always one casualty in the early part of the season (my money this year is on Fergie.) With a reputation such as his, it can only be damaged by taking a chance in the Midlands. If I was MON, Id be sitting on my hands for a little longer.

The job is ideal for O'Neil, he can sign a rolling contract so he is only committed for a year. So if Ellis worms his way out of selling he won't have to put up with the miser for long. He has a proven track record at getting the best out of players, and so should motivate an underachieving team, who have a lot more than they have shown in the last two seasons. He has nothing to lose at Villa, and all to gain. He will be the most popular managerial appointment isnce Big Ron over ten years ago. There WILL be money to spend in Jan as the takeover seems likely. Why take on the Man U job? It will be a very tough act to follow, not so at VP.
Wow!
What a pathetic article.
You say that sheffield Wednesday are bigger than Aston Villa yeah? Ok, that makes sense mate, also, has he had an option to move to Spurs or City? No, because they already have great managers.
Our team consists of some good players to, in your article you say we have no players which could walk into another premiership team, we have Steven Davis, Milan Baros, Olof Mellberg and Gareth Barry to name a few. All of which have had interest in them recently.
You need to get your facts right before you write an article, this is an absolute joke.
This is the most biased piece of rubbish ive seen written about the villa. You obviosly have no understanding of the potential of the club at all. Also the villa players individually are better than you give them credit for. However i wont bore you with nameing their individual honours, i suggest you do a bit more reading and research before you comment on other peoples clubs.
good day to you sir!
What a poorly written article.
You my friend are an ill informed. He could wait and take a better job, but what is this better job.
Aston Villa are not a big club because of their ground but because of their support and history. They are the only premiership club in the midlands and in Englands second city, a huge market. The fact that they won the European Cup means they will have support elsewhere on the Planet too.
They are yes a club in Turmoil, but you could take that as O'Neill having the chance to sort out a once great team he cannot do any worse than what went before him.
As regards the squad Aston Villa has a top 3 in England Youth setup and I feel the rewards of that will be seen next season. Along with Swedish Captain Mellberg, Euro 2004 top Scorer Baros, and internationals Barry and Bouma not to mention windsor park Hero Steven Davis, they have a backbone of real potential, underachieving under the previous regime yes but real quality none the less.
As regards the crazy man in charge, and what if a takeover doesnt happen. He is 82 years old now and no man is immortal, but with 4 bidders at the table I would stake a heavy claim that it will be sold, and money will be made either now or in January.
So why not wait till January, because Martin O'Neill is a Professional and to wait would be unprofessional.
Aston Villa my friend are the Next BIG THING!!!
Villa are not a big club. Interesting thought that perhaps needs further definition on your part.
As for Villa players not walking into any other team..again, very interesting.
I think you are looking to deeply in to what has been poor management over recent seasons.
You are a moron. Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Sheff Wed have never won the European Cup - furthermore - when Villa accomplished this, along with Forest, they were League Champions. The likes of Liverpool winning it ("big club") shows the modern competition to be a farce.
Let me clarify, for those of you hard of reading....
Spurs....not a big club
City.....not a big club (Manchester, Birmingham. Brechin....whichever you reckon)
Wednesday.....not a big club......
Villa....not a big club
Does this make it any clearer?
JR
Which Massive club like City do you refer to? Add to our European Cup 7 Division 1 Titles, 7 FA Cups and 5 League Cups, an average gate of about 35000 with a shit team and you get the drift - we had 45000 gates in Division 3!. Aston Villa is a big deal and anyone who says otherwise doesn't know their history or is just jealous. Up the Villa the revolution begins today!
Whoever wrote this must be an absolute idiot!!(or a blue nose) goes hand in hand i guess
what sort of a tinpot website is this?
What a load of old cobblers. Villa have huge potential and MON could just be the man to make improvements. People talk about the likes of Newcastle, Spurs, etc, but what have these teams actually achieved? Spurs have managed about 4/5 seasons in the top 10 since the Prem began.
Just remember that this squad of players finished 6th a couple of seasons back and have under-performed due to the inept tactics of O'Leary.
Also, if you think that the likes of Davis, Barry, Mellberg and Baros are not Premiership class then you are more deluded than your lazy report gives you credit for.
I'm not going to get into whether Villa is a big enough club, but I agree with you that O'Neill's timing is bizarre.
Why would you join a club in the middle of a take-over? You don't know who the owner is going to be in 3 months, what direction they want to take the club or whether you can get on with them.
I'm surprised at O'Neill.
Villa founded the League. They are THE oldest English club in the top flight. The team may be mediocre performers but dont confuse the team with the club. Teams come and teams go but the club is forever. The team may have potential but MON needs to get the best out of each player to finish in top half. prediction -7th.
