Social Networking site for all sports lovers

Posted by Martin in Arsenal | 13 June 2007

It seems like every day a new social networking site pops up, but how often for lovers of sport.

So I was slightly surprised to find that isporty had done a deal with the BBC to support their cycling website, but also isporty had launched in February and I hadn't heard of it. I tend to keep my eye on these sort of things!

So I've checked it out.

Registering for the site is pretty straight forward, you have to part with the normal amounts of personal info to get you up and running, but you get used to that now on the web.

I like the fact that I immediately have 3 buddies, including the founder Chris Ward.

Isporty has all the features you'd expect with a social networking site, blogs, forums, videos, photos, profile, messaging, invites etc, etc. However, when you start to use it it’s easy to get lost. At least I did. I had to logout and login again to find my way back to my homepage.

For me isporty has three problems :

a) if you read the about us page, it’s not clear what the site is really trying to achieve. Try and summarise what it’s aiming to do in one sentence and I think you’d struggle.
b) it's trying to do too much, it should focus initially on meeting a single need or niche and build out from there.
c) it has a very confused navigation that isn't consistent and leaves the user not knowing where they are or how they get back to what they last saw that interested them.

I eventually found a blog for Arsenal fans, but it hadn't been updated since the beginning of March. However, on that front I'm just as guilty.

I do think it’s an interesting site, though the vision or concept needs some work.

The summers here and so you may have a bit of time to play with these things before the footie season is upon us again. Certainly one worth watching, so take a look!
