Can Arsenal win the league?

Posted by Martin in Arsenal, Chelsea, Man United, Tottenham | 4 February 2008

Firstly, a big thanks to Spurs and to Dimitar Berbatov, for holding United to a draw at the week end. Thanks must also go to Portsmouth for keeping Chelsea at bay. Once again we climb to the top of the table and are clear by 2 points!

Had I been asked to predict at the start of the season where we'd be at this point in time, I wouldn't have said top. Last year we were 4th at this point. If I recall, some pundits were even predicting Spurs to be sitting above us! So it just goes to show how wrong even the pro's can be at gazing into the future. But given what I know now, like Cesc Fabrigas, I believe Arsenal can win the league.

Why?

1) Despite the frustration that Wenger didn't buy any new players, (or ones that would make a difference this year!), the likes of Almunia, Clichy and Senderos are coming good and are really upping their game. A couple of months ago I'd have quite happily seen Senderos on the transfer market, but not now! Wenger has options, but I guess he knew that all along!

2) Adebayor - He's improving with every game. Already this season he's scored 18 goals, that's 10 more than he scored in total last year in the league. Since we still have to play Man United and Chelsea away, which could well be the league deciders, there's nothing to suggest that the goals wont keep coming. How does the song go?

"Adebayor, Adebayor, give him the ball, and he will score" or something like that!

3) Flamini has tremendous passion and as demonstrated against Newcastle, he can cross the ball with pin point accuracy and has a blinding strike power. If he can replicate that kind of performance until the end of the season, we'll be un-beatable!

4) And with the imminent return of Toure, Rosicky and Robin Van Persie - well!

So the team may be young, we may have some way to go and may need to hit the 90 point mark to win the league, but the team believes they can do it, Wenger certainly does, so why shouldn't I?

Spurs fan here (But here is peace) As you say, many so called "experts" expected Arsenal to struggle this year and given what I'm sure you would have viewed as a disapointing season last year and the lack of new players I suppose they could be forgiven for this. (Tipping Spurs to finish above you I think was foolish and ignored the difficulty of breaking into that top 4 positions. The fact is that Arsenal have a strength in depth and probably just as important a confidence that means they can never be discounted. I do believe that it is going to be very tight between ManU and yourselves, but I don't believe Chelsea have quite enough to challenge.

i am a spurs fan here and totally agree with matthew above as it was foolish to dismiss the difficulty of breaking the so called top 4. i think arsenal, as much as it goes against what yids think, will be a good shoe in for the title and dare i say it they deserve it, owwwwww i just felt alot of pain lol. i dont think that they look like stopping 2 be honest and man utd just arent putting title performaces as was seen against spurs. coys!!!

Judging by the fact you cant spell Fabregas and you are not sure of the words to your own teams song, im guessing you are a glory hunting armchair supporter that has merely jumped on the Arsenal bandwagon like most gooners!

It's good to have an objective discussion with Spurs supporters, as evidenced by the comments above.

I think that the mistakes that Spurs have made in the past are (1) Daniel Levy seems to announce his ambitions as achievements, before they have been realised e.g. a couple of years ago he claimed that Spurs were the best team in North London, he claimed that Spurs would be in the top four the year before last, last year and again this year but had no substance behind the claims and (2) the decisions about which players to buy were being made by people without the ability to make good decisions and not the manager.

You have to feel very sorry for Martin Jol, as he knew that Spurs weakness was in defence but the management went out and spent a fortune on Darren Bent!

What impresses me now though is that Juande Ramos is a proper manager and one with a track record. He is already addressing the real problems at Tottenham and I believe that next season Spurs will really, and deservedly, be challenging for a place in the top four.

I hope (and expect - with fingers crossed) that it will be at the expense of Liverpool rather than us but Spurs look much more like a competitive team now.

it is nice to hear some mature and realistic comments from rival fans, all this brainless online animosity is a bit silly, cheers!

i think it's going to be tough, and, as the eternal pessimist that i am, i think arsenal may not win anything this year! nevertheless, pat raises a good point about manu's form recently...

the key to me seems to be keeping flamini and one of either kolo or gallas fit. Flamster is the only arsenal midfielder who can play that holding position with any tenacity and guile as is required. gilberto has lost it, diarra is gone (like the retard he is) so that leaves just flamini. Wenger should have replaced diarra in jan, hopefully he will this summer!

And judging by your comment your a very sad/bitter man that spends his time hounding out supporters from clubs he doesn't like.

A few 1 goal margin wins at home against relegation teams and everyone loses their head and thinks Arsenal can win the title

Look how delighted Arsenal players were to snatch a draw at home against Man Utd after going behind, a title winning side should have been disappointed at not winning, let alone going behind

Whereas Spurs were in the lead against Man Utd at the end of the 90 minutes required and were once again robbed by Mark "Pedro Mendes scored but I'll pretend I didn't see it" Clattenburg giving Ferguson Injury Time

I thought the Manure players celebrated their equalising goal at whitehart lane like ther had just won the CL, a title winning side should have been disappointed at not winning, let alone going behind.
