Arsenal's Dein gone, Wenger's future in doubt

Posted by Martin in Arsenal, Arsene Wenger | 19 April 2007

After 23 years at Arsenal, Dein has gone, throwing the club into turmoil. Having refused to state that he wouldn't sell his shares for a year, Dein was given no choice but to step down from his role at the Gunners.

Whilst this throws into question whether Dein will now sell his shares to Kroenke, taking his stake in the club to 25%, Deins removal from the board also impacts Wenger, as Dein was one of Wengers closest allies, not least because Dein originally brought him to the club 10 years ago.

With the season pretty much over and no trophies, the board I'm sure are going to re-look at the strategy of sticking with youth over experience and the Wenger approach of building the team from the ground up. This must have had Dein's support and influence at board level.

Whilst it would appear the Chairman has given an indication that he wants Wenger to renew his contract beyond 2008, with the current turmoil and uncertainty and lack of trophies for Wenger to show for, it could leave him in a tenuous situation!

What do you think?

Excuse me but what has all this to do with Arsene. A board member leaves and people naturally assume the whole club is going to pot. There is more to this than meets the eye so please dont assume anything until facts are known. My thanks to David Dein for what you have done for The Arsenal over the past 20 odd years.
