A tale of two Arsenals

Posted by Gringo Maclure in Arsenal | 7 March 2008

On Tuesday night Arsenal comprehensively outplayed and knocked out the reigning European Champions. Where I live, in Brazil, Arsenal's success was widely reported as the best football seen so far in this year's competition of Europe's elite.

On Wednesday night Arsenal were in action again, this time in Brazil. Arsenal de Sarandi, an Argentinian team founded in 1957 whose name was inspired by the London Gunners, were playing away against Fluminense of Rio de Janeiro in the Copa Libatadores, South America's Champions League. The Brazilian national news channel ran a short feature on the Arsenal of South America. In several street spot interviews Brazilians were asked if they had heard of Arsenal - most mentioned the English club, few had heard of their Argentinian counterparts.

Arsenal de Sarandi have no major honours to their name except for winning last season's Copa Sudamerica (the South American UEFA cup). Their game against Fluminese was a wash out - the Brazilian outfit ran them over 6-0. Still a way to go, then, before they live up to the illustrious achievements of their namesakes.
