10 reasons why Arsenal is crap this season!

Guys! I thought, for a change, I'll write about Arsenal this time. I’m writing this after Arsenal & Graham Poll beat Tottenham 3-0. This is to say that today’s result has not changed my view of Arsenal this season. So, what’s hurting Arsenal and why are they doing so poorly this season that Fulham fans are singing “can we play you every week”. 10 reasons!
1. Arsene Wenger
The man who transformed Arsenal is now unfortunately the culprit. His every move and words are realised by the fans and critics as ridiculous - his signings, his team selection, the roles he assigns to players, his strategy and of course, his embarrasing post-match comments. Overall, he should take the blame for most of their problems. He does not have the guts to drop who performs poorly and he cannot tell Henry to give away his captaincy to a real leader in the team. Looking at his team’s lack lustre game time and again, I have to conclude that he is a poor motivator too. He can’t blame it on lack of money or whatever. It was their strategy to spend a billion pounds on the new stadium and still he had decent amount of money which he did not make best use of.
2. All pass - No shoot game
They play possession football (their fans call it beautiful football!). Their midfield keeps passing until they get 6 inches from the goal post. This works against those little teams that look at them in awe and allow them to play their game. They play this way also because, there are only 2 geniune goal scorers in Arsenal now - Henry and van Persie. The other players, even if they get a position where they can give it a shot, just tamely pass it to the goal scorers in poorer positions. No wingers in the team and full backs are not at their best as they aren’t sure whether the other players will trackback for defensive duties, if needed. This won’t work always.
3. It’s freakin predictable
From Watford to Chelsea, they all know how Arsenal plays. It is just going by Arsene’s script and he bloody never changes his script because he won this way some seasons back. Now, their runs, their movements, their triangle passes, their 1-2s, everything is completely predictable. They dont even counter-attack! If they get a break, they hold the ball aloowing the whole of the opposition eleven to crowd in the last third and scrap-defend somwhow. If you have seen the teams defending them this season, you can realise that they have read Arsenal’s game so well and they have never been disappointed. To all the league one and league two teams that might play Arsenal in any of the cup matches - If you dont plan to attack them, you won’t lose.
4. Thierry Henry
For all the drama on the night of Champions League final and his much-awaited decision of staying with Arsenal, he has not pulled a plant in this season. After his outburst against Barca players and their methods and his signing of a new contract with Arsenal, I thought he is gonna play with the fire in his belly to achieve something this season. But now, he looks hardly determined to take the ball to the box. He is a captain and only his armband will tell you this. Great players need not make good captains. He is not inspirational and this has a huge impact on the team when the team is a goal down or something. With two open play goals this season so far, he looks completely out of sorts.
5. Lack of experience
It was purely Arsene Wenger’s decision to leave out Vieira, Pires and the like and he could have either avoided it or timed it better or atleast need not have flushed them all in one season. It was his own strategy to buy ‘talented’ youngsters and improve them and now he cannot give this excuse of team being inexperienced. His scoutings and signings of the youngsters have been flops over the last two seasons and his youngsters have disappointed him - adebayor is blind, eboue inconsisent, with Song or Hoyte, you start a man down etc. While Arsene was hailed for bringing and developing young ‘talent’, he should also take the stick for the other consequences of a young team.
6. Lack of muscles
Like they say, Arsenal is now a light-weight team. Barring one or two, all others get easily outmuscled by the opponents. Their midfield players like Fabregas, Hleb, Flamini are all very light and in fact, against good defenders/midfielders, they are just pushovers. If you’re ready to tackle them hard, you’ll kill their game. Whenever they are hard tackled and outmuscled to win the ball, Arsenal players and manager feel that the opponents are playing dirty. As long as they think this way, any team in EPL would know how to negotiate them. Tackling hard is very much part of the game, if you dont know how to do it or how to handle it, it’s your fault.
7. No balls
Most of their matches so far this season (about 9, may be), they have conceded the goal early on and keep chasing the opposition. How many times have they come back and beaten the opponent - one against lowly Hamburg (19th in Bundesliga). No team spirit, no determination and no one has the burning desire to win. They dont show their reaction or response in a rousing manner. You can see smiling Arsenal faces after a bad defeat! They dont feel insulted when they lose. Simply put, no balls.
8. Cornered in Set Pieces
Their defending in corners have been the best joke of the season. Poor marking, no positional cognizance and running the other way round lol! Their attacking in corners has also been below par for a so-called top 4 team. Apart from a header from Adeb and Gallas, no impact at all. The opposition defenders can defend effortlessly as mostly the delivery will be crap. As their conversion ratio is so poor, this gives another avenue for the defence to clear the ball anywhere.
9. Headless game
This is an offshoot of their all pass-no shoot game. They are poor in the air. They’ll never win the 50-50 headers against decent teams. Barring Walcott, no one seems to be crossing to the head, they all just pass to the feet. So, the opposition defence can throw themselves on the 3-metre passing line and stop their flow. When the opponent plays in the air, crossing the ball, their timing goes wayward. With this kind of game, they’ll get killed in Europe, unless they wish to play crap ‘men-behind-ball’ like last season.
10. Deformation of 4-5-1
A defensive 4-5-1 did work for them in the Champions League. Henry looks lost in 4-5-1 and takes too much burden. With Henry as the 1 in 4-5-1, he is anyway over-marked by the defenders to nullify the only possible goal scorer in Arsenal. Even if he holds the ball, there is only one way of scoring goals now, that is from Henry, so defenders have an eagle eye on him. Adebayor is a waste of space if he is the 1 in the 4-5-1. I guess the opponent defenders would rejoice if the see the Arsenal team sheet that Adeb is the lone striker. And van Persie is also not a striker to play in 4-5-1, as he can’t hold the ball. So, a wrong formation for the current composition of this team.
My prediction for Arsenal this season is 5th place. I dont think I’ll see them in the Champions League next season. And in Champions league, well, let them finish Porto first!

A particularly lame piece of analysis here my friend. There are elements of truth in all of your arguments, but as seems to be happening alot with Arsenal fans these days it is based upon the expectation that Arsenal should be the best team each and every season. Arsenal are no different in stature than teams such as Liverpool, Everton, Spurs and even Villa. Until recently similar sized grounds, all with a decent fan base. Arsenal have over achieved in the last 10 years. Wenger knows this and the board knows this, hence the stadium project to take the club to the next level.
At the moment, financially there is no competing with Chelsea. Manure have always had more money than Arsenal (see Veron, Rooney, Ferdinand etc..). At the moment Arsenal are trying to address this. When the time comes that we don't have a manager who can assemble a squad on a shoestring this will be vital.
I would be interested to see the choices of manager and players that the Wenger knockers would choose at the moment.
I am not doubting that there is improvement to be made in the way that we are playing at the moment. An extra 5% would see us winning pretty much every game. However the tone of this and many other articles of deep and findamental crisis is getting very annoying.
most of this is actually true. im not saying arsenal are crap, that is way too extreme, they are still a very good team but the reason they are not among the best is for some of the reasons above. i agree with the bit about the passing, i dont personally find arsenal an attractive team to watch, it is, like the guy says, possession football. i think manchester united play beautiful and exciting football.
I seem to remember Arsenal being one nil down against Charlton, before RvP scored two terrific goals to end the match 2-1. am i mistaken?..... please, whatever you do pal, don't give up your day job and become a football critic.
Whenever anyone says arsene Wenger is the biggest problem at Arsenal, I turn off. I'm an arsenal fan, but even if I wasn't i'd appreciate that Arsene is now making his fourth team (after '98, 02, 04 being 3 of them), and that i've watched some of the finest football from a club in Britain. Afternoon, a few thoughts to mull over with your "Top 10":
1. Wenger is Arsenal's most successful manager and has fostered the careers of at least two of the world's best players (Vieira and Henry). As for his comments please see any post match interview anywhere in the world. Ever. And as for Ashburton Grove you seem you have let money go tou your head; the stadium was financed for in the region of GBP660m, well short of the GBP1bn (surely you must be thinking of Wembley - which I grant you is a joke).
2. Our "beautiful football" (by the way would you rtather watch the Arsenal or, and I hate to say it, the Bolton-long-ball-all-stars) won us the name The Invincibles as we went an entire season and a bit to spare UNBEATEN.
3. From Watford to Chelsea you say? Well obviously not Manchester then, given we are the only team to beat them this season in the league (and, I hasten to add, at Old Trafford wirth a goal from a 'kid' younger than me (and before you ask I'm 23)).
4. For all his talent, skill and almost majestic ability on the ball, the best you can come up with after the man has scored more goals for Arsenal than any other man, is the last player in Europe to score a hat-trick away from home (Roma) and arguably should have won world player of the year 2 seasons back is... no fire in his belly? Give me a break.
5. It was lack of experience that broke the record of time without conceeding in Europe, that got all the way to the final, and that with a goalkeeper down very nearly beat Barcelona... you're right. They're crap.
6. For the first time you may well have a point I agree with you on. More muscle in the middle of the field would be nice but let us not forget that horrific injury that has put Diaby out for the entire season.
7. hmmm... a worrying trend I admit but far from being the apocalypse; we are yet to lose at Ashburton Grove
8. When has our strongest suit ever been set pieces? To say we cant attack a corner you could say 5 seasons ago - now admittedly we haven't won the league for the past couple of seasons but we haven't faired too bad.
9. 50/50 headers are exactly that: you have a half chance of winning it. Watch how many times we clear up the ball after the initial header and you may cahnge your mind slightly (but yes, I admit, not totally)
10. Finally, a point where I totally agree.
And as for 5th? Get bent.
Arsenal will finish 3rd. I guarantee it. I have the officials doing whatever I want. You saw it on Saturday with the obvious offside and 2 no penalties. That is just the start. I will continue to screw opposing teams.

When you are an Arsenal Fan its very difficult to take defeat these days..and there are a few points that might be correct..Set pieces and the wieght in mid field...
I have supported the Arsenal for a very long time and I believe so strongly in wenger that he will turn this young team yet again into a championship winning side like he has done in the past,not by splashing out cash..But he has that magic touch of turning youngsters into world class players..Fabregas Toure Eboue Clichy van persie..and so on.Expierence will come with games and maybe we will suffer a bit due to mistakes but we have no pires berkahamp cole campbell all gone.With Gallas and Henry out injured plus Freddie has had an injury which kept him out and only recently back we have had problems,Rosinsky has still alot to come and so those Hleb..Lauren is still out and Diaby too..When we have the majority of the squad available I have no doubt in my mind that we will yet again be a stronger team.Wenger will build a team again and Arsenal will win the leauge again in the near future.

Incredible article, one that can be only constructed by blue bias. I agree you touch on some pounts, but merely slighty and you've picked them up from the journalists who have as much understanding of football as a fish - nothing you've said is very insightful.
1. I agree Wenger is off the boil. He's having a crisis and it's showed yesterday. His stubborness in not changing the game against Porto was unforgivable. His team selection yesterday (Flamini was playing on the wing?) and Fulham was baffling and negative. Baptista must start on Sunday. However you then talk absolute shit. He's a genius, he HAS dropped Henry. I don't know how you can conclude he's a poor motivator, the team are hungry and passionate - though his tactics currently can be criticised. Though knowing Wenger they will pay off.
A Chelsea fan talking about money makes me laugh so we'll move on.
2 All pass no shoot. Absolute Bollocks. They have 16-18 shots per game. The myth that Arsenal don't shoot is piss poor journalism/Chelsea fans. The fact we can't finish is plain to see, but we'll hit our groove again. Arsenal used to score every game, we'll see that again.
3 Our problem is we are visably slower on the break now. We've lost pace. We onced scored 13 seconds from a goal kick. We need to be quicker. Wenger actually mentioned the size of the pitch is slowing us down, I tend to agree.
4 Spot on, almost. He does take the ball into the box, but seems to be running INTO players. Not sure, perhaps at full fitness he'll be able to skin them again. Time will tell.
5 True to a degree, but our youth is gaining experience. I long to see Gallas back again, he's incredible. A real leader. Commands our back line. The rest is bollocks. Adebayour - he continues to prove me wrong. Blind? He's finished some excellent goals, but he's still only young and in his first full season at Arsenal. He'll come good - or will be out. Eboue needs to work on his temper, Pat Rice has been advising him, I'm confident. Though with Lauren back we'll be more solid at the back.
6 Yes. But we can be niggly and bitey, but that's not how we play. We like to be free flowing and that's when we are unstoppable. But we do need to deal with it. I want to see Baptista battering players. Diaby will be a similar influence.
7 Suck my balls. We have incredible team spirit. Watch a game. We do need to address the first goal issue, but we do fight back. We fucked Bolton second half and should have scored 3. Didn't, and were punished. But desire was there. Just need the finish.
8 We never score from corners apart from Liverpool, but we used to be able to defend them. We'll sort that. Though Clichy is slight and small he has some leap.
9 crap ‘men-behind-ball’ gave us some incredible EXCITING games against big teams. A Chelsea fan cricitising another team for playing men behind the ball has actually made me piss myself. Take the blinkers off.
10Adebayour CAN lead the line in a 4-5-1. With the right players behind him. He was awesome against Man Utd and Tottenham. However we need wide players behind. Theo on wing. NOT VAN PERSIE. And someone attacking in midfield such as Baptista. Not Flamini. Wenger can't get that personel right.
We'll be third. And we will rape you at the bridge on Sunday.

I completely agree that Arsene was a great manager. He made Arsenal play very good football and he also won the unbeaten league etc. This is all great past and glory. And these are facts too. I can't deny them.

pretty lame article. We're currently in both domestic cup competitions, in the knockout round of the champions league and in a CL qualifying spot for next season. We're doing this with by far the youngest squad amongst the top four. Our 'predictable' play has garnered 15 goals in our last 4 games. Wenger's 'poor' signings (No1 really rated Song and Aliadiere) played like Jean Tigana and Marco Van Basten against Liverpool. Wenger knows, you don't.
This article is a month old. Two away cup wins against Liverpool and a Premiership away win at Blackburn with ten men later, and your article looks pretty lame. Sometimes, silence is a virtue my friend. Best reserve judgement until the end of the season in future,to avoid looking like a complete tit and all that.

Why havent Arsenal ever had the indian glory hunter thing? Liverpool, Man U and the Tappers of Stamford do! I really feel we are missing out on something.
Even with their ill-gained money, Chelsea would still be nothing without their "get it to frank!" attitude or Drogba's ability to stand in an offside position unseen by any linesman.

arsenal are going to finish 3rd or 4th. They are out of all competitions and havnt won anthing for 3 years.They may qualify for europe but will do as they do every year and get knocked out in the group stages or quater finals. On the other hand, spurs are improvin every year and have had a good season in all competitions. ARSENAL UR FUTURE IS NOT BRIGHT!!
