Solar powered iPods, iPhones and laptops

MacRumors has discovered a published patent for Apple for solar power, enabling users to leave their device in the sun to charge, extending battery life and reducing carbon emissions.
The problem with solar power on small devices like iPods, mobile phones and laptops is the lack of space for the solar cells. However, it looks like Apple could overcome this by putting the solar cells behind the existing LCD screen and capturing the ambient light that filters through.
With the massive number of Apple devices owned around the world and the huge amount of fossil-fuel generated electricity used to power them, this would be a clever use of technolgy to overcome a usability problem as well as an environmental one.
