Battery hens are good for the environment

At 9pm tonight (UK time) BBC Radio 4 has a programme called 'Costing the earth' which challenges the view that free-range animals are environmentally friendly animals.
The argument is that if you look at the total environmental impact of rearing birds, battery farming is better than free-range, organic farming.
It will be interesting to hear the logic for this but even if it's true, I doubt moving away from free-range back towards battery farming is the answer.
Instead we should maintain animal welfare and if need be reduce the volume of chickens produced - through eliminating waste and encouraging a more varied diet.
