It's planting time for the Veg garden

The last two weekends have been a flurry of activity in the vegetable patch with planting for my third season gowing my own vegetables.

As I've written before I've extended the patch a little and have learnt from some of last years trials and errors.

Sticking with the successes I've planted two rows of shallots, four rows of onions and 5 rows of potatoes. I've also planted 2 rows of garlic - literally just cloves off a shop-bought garlic bulb - which are already showing green shoots!

One of my in-laws kindly dropped off a rhubarb plant which is tucked in one corner and my father-in-law bought up 30 strawberry plant off-shoots at the weekend. He showed me how to plant them and afterwards I showed him the tip I picked up from Jamie Oliver - spikey twigs stuck in the ground covering them to keep pigeons away.

I've also potted runner and green bean seeds, a first crop of tomatoes and brussel sprouts in the shed window.

I'll give it a couple of weeks then plant the first salads and I'd like another courgette plant as last year's was terrific.

Then it's half an hour every other evening watering, weeding and pruning and a bounty of summer vegetables.
