Environmentally friendly DIY

Now, those that know me, will confirm that I haven’t always been one of the most environmentally friendly people! It took me quite a while to enter into the re-cycling mindset and I wasn't particularly quick at getting into compost mode.

However, the one thing I've always done, is reclaim materials when carrying out d.i.y. Over time I've ended up with wood and screws from old cupboards, good quality electric cable and light fittings and various odd bits of copper pipe and plumbing bits. The only downside being, I can't now get into my garage!

How many times have I ended up down the local wood yard, buying new, when actually I had what I needed?

I'm currently half way through revamping our bathroom and I'm feeling quite smug. I've finally remembered that stock of goodies in the garage and I've been able to find what I needed!

I've used the wood and reclaimed screws in the construction of a partition wall for the shower and some of the old plumbing bits when fitting the new bath and sink.

I did however fail to reclaim the old cast iron bath, which I was going to take to the local re-cycling centre!

Fortunately, leaving it outside the front of the house did the job. I had one caller ask if he could take the taps and another caller took the whole bath (not that they actually asked!).

I'm now left thinking that I probably could have sold it on ebay, the best recycling place of all!
