The carbon dioxide that our cars produce is one of the main causes of global climate change, which in turn is one of the major threats to the future of the planet. In fact the average family car produces over 4.5 tonnes per year. There’s a lot of talk of carbon offsetting, but how many of us actually know what carbon offsetting is?

Whether you choose to share lifts on journeys to and from work, use a hybrid or Smart car, everyone can and should do their bit to try and save the planet. Equally, by checking that our cars have the correct tyre pressure we can save approximately 10kg of CO2 every 500 miles.

International Car Free Day is on 22nd September. It gives people the perfect excuse to leave their car at home for the day. For people who simply cannot get to work without their motor there are new alternatives such as carbon neutral car insurances from ibuyeco. That way you can drive your car and help save the planet at the same time! Joining us live is Fifth Gear’s Tiff Needell and Julia Walker-Smith from ibuyeco to tell us more about carbon offsetting, but before that, here are some quick tips to help you get to grips with off setting:

- Make sure your tyres are at the correct pressure and you could save fuel and approximately 10kg of CO2 every 500 miles.

- Maintain performance and fuel consumption of your car by ensuring it is regularly serviced.

- Reduce your speed – 100 tonnes of CO2 would be saved per year if 5000 drivers drove at 60mph instead of 70mph.

- Save over a tonne of CO2 per year and reduce your fuel costs by car sharing with a colleague who lives in your area.

Tiff Needell is joined by Julia Walker-Smith live online on 21st September at 15:00 to discuss how we can all do our bit for the planet by offsetting our carbon emissions.
