Rats have invaded my composter!

GrassWhen I purchased my house it came complete with a wonderful composter constructed out of an old coal bunker.

It was great, had two sections, one for newly decomposing garden and kitchen waste and the other for more mature and almost ready to go compost.

However, it had a similar problem to David's, it attracted rats.

When my local council started to go green, I took up their offer and bought one of their composters for a fiver! Whilst the recommendation was to lay it on earth, I decided to place it on concrete, fill it with some great compost from my existing composter and see how it went.

It's works well, delivers great compost and no rats!

However, last week I made the mistake of over filling the compost bin, leaving the lid slightly open. What should I find on my last visit to the bin, Rats!

Now I have a dilemma. I've made sure the lid is firmly closed and so there's now no way out for my new furry friends.

So ..

1 Do I let them eat all they can and hope they die a happy and full life and let them decompose with everything else?
2 Do I open up the lid, hope they escape and new ones don't invade? Or
3 Do I find some environmentally way to kill them?

I haven’t decided yet. I'm hoping the first option will work, but I'm open to suggestions!
