Raising money the unpolluting way

runners_480562.jpgSomehow I can't stop myself volunteering for energetic events to raise money for charity. Having run four marathons and raised £5,000 for the Rainforest Foundation I decided last year not to do any more.

Yet here I am three days away from cycling 52 miles in the classic London to Brighton bike ride for the British Heart Foundation.

And why? Because last year I cheered on my dad on when he did it aged 70 and after a heat operation (though obviously not immediately afterwards, he was allowed beakfast first).

One thing common to all these events is that they are low impact environmentally. Running and cycling are clean and although there will be a van picking up riders at the end of the cycle ride, it's one vehicle for 14 people.

I did think about entering a green vehicle for the Dakar rally in 2010. My brother in law is a mechanic and I reckoned we could convert a buggy to solar, electrtic and biodiesel power and do the rally with minimum emissions.

However, I then watched Charlie Boorman's Race to Dakar and realised you need a sanity bipass to do that race.

I still think it would be great to see an incredibly clean vehicle do the race against the Hummers.

In the meantime I'll still with pedalling. If you're feeling generous and want to lend your support, my sponsorship page is at the BHF site.
