Vegetable patch planting

sun_plant_734023.jpgAfter planting three rows of potatoes a few weeks ago, it was time yesterday to get the rest of the crops planted or prepared.

I sowed another row of potatoes to be ready later in the season. I also planted three lines of onions. All these were placed in a shallow trench lined with the thick, black compost from the bottom of my bin.

When compost works well it doesn't smell and isn't too bad to handle. And although it's a little sad to be so excited, I'm really proud that I haven't had to use any shop bought peat or compost.

I also sorted out the tomatoes. I laid old newspaper in the bottom of a seed tray and covered it with compost. Then I sprinkled in the tomoato seeds I dried from last year's crop and covered with more compost. After a good watering I placed them in our lean-to greenhouse.

Finally, I potted the green bean and runner bean seeds - again dried from last year's plants - in more compost.

All I have to do now is plant the shallots, sort out carrots and look at how I can keep the scrourge of my garden - slugs - at bay.
