Save Our Selves - 7th July

Posted by DavidM in Events | 15 March 2007

Kevin Wall was the executive producer of the fantastic Live 8 concert and has teamed up with Al Gore and a host of celebrities to run 7 concerts on 7 continents on 7th July 2007 (these guys are into their sevens) to raise awareness of climate crisis.

Under the campaign banner of Save Our Selves - using the SOS morse code motif - the Live Earth concerts were announced earlier this year and will take place in Brazil, Shanghai, Japan, Johannesburg, London, Sydney, and the Eastern United States.

The plan is to have 100 big name acts at the concerts, and the line-up already includes acts I like such as Snow Patrol, Paolo Nutini, Damien Rice, Corinne Bailey Rae, Keane and many others.

The concerts will be carbon neutral (though I wonder if that includes the flights for the artists?) and income from the concerts pay for a multi-year global effort to combat the climate crisis led by The Alliance for Climate Protection, chaired by Al Gore.

This is a big and noble enterprise, learning from the success of Live Aid and Live 8. What lets it down is some shoddy work on the website and the associated MSN page. The 'About Us' page had to redirect me and didn't automatically load and the MSN page froze on me for ages. Trying to sign-up for alerts was a pain.

First the link wouldn't respond and when it did I had to sign up to MSN Windows Live. I know Microsoft are supporting the organisation but how many people will be put off by having to give Microsoft their date of birth, occupation and mothers place of birth just to get alerts about the concerts? For a campaign that's about the greater good it smacks too much of commercialisation.

Anyway, I should now be getting alerts so once details of how to get tickets are published, I'll let you know.
