First potatoes planted

potatoes_661594.jpgThe new planting season has now officially started. This weekend I sowed the first set of new potatoes in the relocated vegetable patch.

I've planted 3 rows with 6-7 potatoes in each. In a month I'll plant another 3 rows to stagger the crop yield.

It was nice to get out there again and especially good to use our home-made compost for the first time. A lovely thick dark mulch from the bottom of the compost bin layered in the trough and the potatoes placed on top then covered.

We had a compost bin years ago and it was a disaster so I'm happy that this time I got it right.

Next in are the onions and shallots. Then I need to get the seeds potted for the green beans, runner beans and tomatoes.

I also need to do some anti-slug work. I'll put a simple border around the patch (using discarded wood from the rubbish dump if I can) and stick copper tape around the top. I also need to be more vigilant about checking the area in the evening and removing any I see.
