New Year's green resolutions

Posted by DavidM in Family plan | 4 January 2007

I've been thinking over what my resolutions for 2007 should be.

I have a very long way to go to make large improvements in my family's environmental impact, despite a number of changes over the last 6 months.

Although there are many small things I can do, I've decided my resolutions need to be focused on three big things.

1. Driving. Now I have a diesel car I resolve to using biodiesel to replace as much of my diesel usage as possible. I will also drive less, er, stridently so as to be more efficient in my fuel usage.

2. Home fuel. I've done quite a bit to reduce the amount of fuel our house consumes but what we do use is all standard - so mostly fossil fuel based. Wind power isn't viable with the current technology so this year I resolve to get solar power installed at home and to move the remainder of our usage to a green electricity supplier.

3. Work. Having resolved to tackle my 2 biggest personal impacts, my third resolution is to get more involved with and champion environmental activites at work.

I guess it goes without saying that I also resolve to write about it on this here blog.

Now I just have to break the news to the family - "Yes, Dad is going to make all our car trips slower. No, you can still have a hot shower when it's cloudy."
