Green tip #13: cut out the car for short journeys

green_tips.jpgIt's very easy to jump in the car whenever you have to pop to the shops, pick up the kids from school or visit friends locally.

But short car journeys are not only bad for the environment, they're damaging to your car's engine as it doesn't have time to warm up properly.

I decided at the beginning of last summer that I would try not to use the car for any journey under 5 miles. The trick is to organise yourself to cycle or walk and get into a routine where that's the natural option and you only drive by exception rather than the other way round.

It was hard to do initially and I'll be honest and say I've done less as it's got cold but it's still my preference to cycle or walk than use the car.
