Going for a long walk

I had a free day and I decided to go for a walk, or rather a hike. We have a river near us and I've never been sure quite where it comes out along the coast, so my mission was to walk along the river to the sea.

We've had heavy rain and strong winds for the last few days so my walk consisted of much climbing over fallen trees and wading across breaches in the river bank - all adding to the fun.

The main thing, though, was just being in the countryside. I live in a large villge and south of us the river edges around Southampton - a decent sized city. Amazingly though, it took 3 hours before I was walking through a built up area, otherwise I was surrounded by countryside and could only see and hear the conurbation in the distance.

It was a great walk, peaceful and beautiful in a dark autumnal way. And most of all it reminded me what all the writing and changes to be greener are about - protecting our ability to have these occasional days in a natural environment.
