Green Tips #5: Remove bottle tops

I was on holiday in Greece last year and the resort had an outdoor tennis centre. As it was hot and people were exercising hard they needed plenty of fluids and the resort provided free plastic bottles of water.
When I went to throw one of my bottles in the bin a tennis instructor asked me to remove the top first. He then demonstrated why - standing in the bin to squash the bottles. With the lids on they can't be flattened.
It's obvious really but I have always subconsciously replaced the lid before putting bottles in the bin. I've since noticed that almost everyone does the same.
But to reduce landfill space, the number of bin bags used and reduce the cost of rubbish disposal, please take the lids off your empty bottles before you discard them.
