Frugal Computing

Computer use has rocketed in the last decade, and has gained a lot of momentum in the process. I often think the industry is similar to a tractor trailer full of watermelons barrelling towards Nebraska; it just keeps moving along, crushing all roadblocks in the way, using a lot of time and money towards an uncertain end.

There's a lot of evidence that this is all about to change, and one of the big drivers is energy. Turns out, IT uses about 4 to 10 percent of their budget on energy, but that is projected to go up to about 30 to 40 percent in a few short years. Add this into the fact that CIO's are getting really tired of funding million dollar software projects that ultimately fail, the never ending three year cycle of throwing of machine in the trash, and you have a new era of Frugal Computing. More to come on this one, green considerations will definitely be a big part of all IT shops in the near future.
