Aero Turbine - moving wind towards ordinary homes

Posted by DavidM in Wind | 23 November 2006

A while ago I looked at getting a wind turbine for my suburban home and there are three reasons why I didn't go with it.

First, the up front investment is quite high.

Second, I don't have high wind speeds in my area so probably wouldn't get the payback.

Third, traditional turbines are noisy enough to annoy my neighbours.

However, I came across a video about the Aero Turbine developed by Professor Bill Becker from the University of Illinois.

It is smaller, caged so safer for humans and birds, quieter and possibly cheaper than a conventional turbine.

To date only 12 have been installed as they are in pre-production, costing between $5,000 - $10,000 each, but with increased demand and further development they hope to bring a 5ft x 10ft model down below $5,000.

Still expensive for an ordinary household but certainly moving in the right direction.
