The end of the vegetable patch

carrot_577360.jpgMy vegetable patch has pretty much come to the end of it's producing season now, and it's been a good first year for me.

The fine beans were easy and plentiful and the runner beans came late but aplenty.

The six tomato plants met most of our needs over summer with a healthy crop and the onions worked well despite having to sow a second lot of seeds. I've had a few large onions and picked numerous others as spring onions.

The carrots weren't so successful - only one large one from the seeds sown directly into the ground, and just small ones from the overcrowded pot.

The cucumbers and broccoli went to the slugs and my one surviving courgette plant failed to produce due to lack of water.

Finally, although I got something of a crop from the sweetcorn, they wasn't worth the hassle or space.

I've taken seeds from the tomatoes, fine beans and runner beans ready for next year and have planned the patch's move to a larger, sunnier area of the garden.

Key crops will be tomatoes, fine beans, runner beans, carrots and onions and I will try growing some potatoes.

In the meantime the compost bin is filling nicely so that should give a good source of compost for the new patch in spring.
