Improving our water usage

toilet_roll_597220.jpgAnother small step forward on the family plan this weekend.

We are testing one of our toilets with reduced water in the cistern, and if it's okay (which it seems to be so far) we'll do it in the others.

And the positive sign was that it was my wife's idea to do it, so maybe I'm getting to her with this green stuff.

We tried putting a one litre plastic bottle filled with water into the cistern but the space is too small. So we've put in one of those stubby 750ml sports water bottles. With a bit of fiddling and wedging it fits into the bottom of the cistern and doesn't interfere with the mechanism.

I'll give it a week then do the same around the house. We'll save 750ml each time the toilet is flushed, which with 2 children of our own and regular visits from the hordes of kids in the street, is pretty often.

I'm still mulling over getting a variable-flush system to try too.
