Companies wasting energy on overnight computers

Computing.co.uk reports on a survey of British businesses that shows nearly 90% of employees have never been asked to shut down their PC at night.

The PC Energy Report, carried out by the National Energy Foundation (NEF) and software vendor 1E also found that one in five office workers left their computers on at night three times a week, "wasting more than £100m a year and emitting an extra 700,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere".

‘A lot of PC users, especially in large organisations, do not shut down their PCs at the end of the day and do not have their hibernation settings turned on,’ said 1E chief executive Sumar Karayi.

Like many energy reduction tips, turning off PCs at night has financial benefit to businesses that resonates more than the environmental concerns and is very simple to do.

I make sure my PC ad monitor are completely off whenever I leave them for a prolonged period of time and I even unplug my router overnight - why would I pay for 4 green LED lights to be on in an empty room?.
