Compost bin arrives - after 4 months!

Posted by DavidM in Gardening, Reduce, re-use, recycle | 3 September 2006

At last, the composting bin I ordered (and paid for) in April has arrived. I can now reduce the amount of food, paper and grass cuttings I throw out and have free compost ready for the spring vegetable patch planting.

One example of how this changes things is with my newspaper. I only buy The Times on a Saturday and it takes me half the week to get through it. Then I put it in the recycling bin. Not bad.

Now, I'll shred the paper once I've finished with it and use it as bedding for the guinea pigs. The following week when they are cleared out, the bedding, carrot peel and guinea pig poo will all go in the composter.

Another small step forward.

We've had our composting bin for a few years now. The quality of the compost is great.

Got any more tips on less common items that can be composted, like the guinea pig poo ?
